JD or Marco? Trump’s Secret 2028 Strategy Revealed

Former President Donald Trump has started informal discussions with his inner circle about who should lead the Republican Party in the 2028 presidential race, sources familiar with the conversations told Axios.

Trump has repeatedly asked advisers whether Vice President J.D. Vance or Secretary of State Marco Rubio would be the stronger standard-bearer for the GOP after his term.

According to those close to Trump, Vance remains the former president’s preferred choice. The vice president already has a political infrastructure in place that could serve as the foundation for a 2028 campaign. Rubio, on the other hand, has not taken similar steps but has indicated he would back Vance if the vice president chooses to run.

“But Trump has notably and increasingly praised Rubio, in public and private, for his rising profile as secretary of state and national security adviser,” Axios reported.
