The Washington Post is reportedly preparing for sweeping layoffs, marking a severe blow to a once-powerful newsroom that staff say has reached a critical breaking point.
Executive Editor Matt Murray and HR chief Wayne Connell emailed employees early Wednesday, instructing them to “stay home today” but join an 8:30 a.m. ET Zoom meeting, where leadership planned to unveil “significant actions across the company.”
Inside sources reveal that the shake-up could shutter nearly the entire Sports section, close the Books desk, and cancel the daily Post Reports podcast.
The Metro desk, responsible for coverage across Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia, faces one of the deepest cuts, with its structure being “reorganized.” The Post’s international presence is also expected to shrink, though a few overseas bureaus will remain operational.
