President Donald Trump’s immigration enforcement agenda received a major boost Friday after a powerful federal appeals court delivered a ruling that could keep thousands of illegal immigrants behind bars while their deportation cases move forward.
In a closely divided 10-7 decision, the full U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit determined that certain migrants who crossed into the United States without legal authorization are not constitutionally guaranteed a bond hearing while awaiting removal.
The decision represents a significant victory for the Trump administration, which has fought to expand mandatory immigration detention and limit the ability of individuals facing deportation to secure release while their cases remain pending.
