The House chamber was supposed to project unity during the State of the Union. Instead, it became a split screen of applause and open hostility, culminating in a walkout that overshadowed what should have been a solemn, historic moment.
The fireworks began when President Donald Trump pivoted to immigration. As he declared that the federal government’s first obligation is to protect American citizens, Republicans rose in support. Across the aisle, many Democrats remained seated. But one lawmaker refused to stay silent.
Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota abruptly stood and shouted, “You have killed Americans!” Her outburst cut through the chamber, drawing gasps and scattered reactions. President Trump looked directly at her and replied, “You should be ashamed of yourself.”
The exchange did not end there. Omar continued yelling as Rep. Rashida Tlaib sat beside her wearing a pin reading “F— ICE.” At one point, Tlaib also shouted, “Release the Epstein files,” adding to the tension already thick in the room.
