Mullin then indicated that the government’s scrutiny extends beyond Omar and could involve other immigration cases where officials suspect fraud may have occurred at the beginning of the process.
“It’s not just this case, we’re looking at a number of cases similar to this where we’re looking at there may have been fraud from the get-go.”
The comments immediately revived one of the most explosive controversies surrounding Omar, a Somali-born Democrat who has become a nationally prominent member of the progressive wing of the Democratic Party.
Allegations concerning Omar’s marriages and immigration history have circulated for years. Omar has denied accusations that she married her brother, and the claim has remained disputed rather than established through a criminal conviction or public court finding.
Mullin’s remarks are nevertheless significant because they came from the sitting secretary overseeing the Department of Homeland Security, the federal department responsible for major components of the nation’s immigration system.

His statement also appeared to suggest that federal authorities may be taking another look at cases where immigration benefits were allegedly obtained through misrepresentation.
Conservative journalists have investigated Omar’s background since at least 2019, with some reports raising questions not only about her marriage history but also about how members of her family originally entered the United States.
One of the most detailed versions of those allegations came from investigative journalist David Steinberg.
Steinberg alleged that Omar’s biological family assumed identities connected to another Somali family while seeking asylum in the United States during the 1990s.
According to that account, Omar entered America in 1995 as a member of a family using the surname Omar. Steinberg alleged that the family whose identity was used was unrelated to Omar biologically and that the arrangement allowed Omar, her father and one of her sisters to seek asylum in the United States.
The allegations further claim that other members of Omar’s biological family eventually obtained asylum in the United Kingdom under different names.
Those accusations have never been established as fact in a criminal judgment against Omar, but they have fueled years of demands from conservative activists and journalists for federal authorities to conduct a comprehensive investigation.
Reports surrounding Omar’s original identity have also alleged that her name before coming to the United States was Ilhan Nur Said Elmi and that her father was previously known as Nur Said Elmi Mohamed.
The same accounts identify her sister as Sahra Nur Said Elmi and claim three other siblings — Leila Nur Said Elmi, Mohamed Nur Said Elmi and Ahmed Nur Said Elmi — settled in Britain.
The controversy became even more politically combustible because of allegations surrounding Omar’s 2009 marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi.
Critics have long claimed Elmi was Omar’s biological brother and that the marriage was conducted for immigration purposes. Omar has repeatedly rejected that accusation.
Until now, much of the controversy has existed in the world of investigative reports, political opposition research and competing claims.
Mullin’s comments potentially change the political stakes.
A DHS secretary publicly saying that officials are examining possible fraud — while declaring that “Something’s going to happen” — is considerably different from speculation coming exclusively from political commentators.
At the same time, deporting a sitting member of Congress would involve enormous legal hurdles. Omar became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2000, according to her publicly reported biography. Citizenship cannot simply be canceled by a Cabinet secretary; denaturalization generally requires a legal process and proof that citizenship was unlawfully procured or obtained through material misrepresentation.
Whether the government possesses evidence capable of meeting that standard is unknown.
Mullin did not disclose investigative documents, announce criminal charges, identify a pending court action or provide a timetable for whatever action he suggested could be forthcoming.
But his remarks leave one unmistakable question hanging over Washington: What exactly has DHS uncovered?
For years, Omar’s critics have demanded that federal authorities investigate the allegations instead of dismissing them as partisan attacks.
Now the man running the Department of Homeland Security is openly talking about possible immigration fraud and declaring that something is coming.
If Mullin’s comments are followed by an official investigation, court filing or enforcement action, one of the longest-running controversies surrounding Ilhan Omar could suddenly become far more than a political dispute.
