A growing divide is emerging on the American left as Sen. Bernie Sanders moves to distance himself from some of the most controversial positions associated with the progressive movement.
Sanders, I-Vt., recently rejected the idea that serious candidates for public office are campaigning on “defund the police,” abolishing prisons or eliminating the nation’s borders. His comments have now put the spotlight on some of the most prominent progressive Democrats in Congress — including Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn.
The debate is particularly notable because several of the positions Sanders dismissed became central talking points for portions of the progressive movement following the 2020 death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.
