A rattled Newsom quickly acknowledged it.
“Right outside, at this exact moment, are dozens and dozens of ICE agents,” he admitted in front of the crowd.
Suddenly, his confident tone crumbled.
“You think it’s coincidental?” he sputtered. “Donald Trump and his minions decided, coincidentally or not, that this was a location to advance ICE arrests.”
The federal agents weren’t shy about explaining why they were there. Border Patrol Sector Chief Gregory Bovino laid it out clearly.
“We’re here making Los Angeles a safer place. Since we won’t have politicians that’ll do that, we do that ourselves,” Bovino declared.
And when reporters pressed him on whether the timing of the operation was intentional, Bovino didn’t back down.
“Breaking the law is not coincidental. Breaking the law is breaking the law. There’s no coincidence in breaking the law. So when they break the law, you can expect that you’re probably going to get arrested,” he stated.
At least one arrest was made right outside the museum as Newsom was speaking – delivering devastating optics for a governor who prides himself on shielding illegal aliens.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass rushed over and immediately unleashed fury on the federal agents.
“There is no way this was a coincidence. This was widely publicized that the governor and many of our other elected officials were having a press conference here to talk about redistricting, and they decided they were going to come and thumb their nose in front of the governor’s face,” Bass fumed.
Bass, who earlier this year jetted off to Ghana while her city struggled with crime and chaos, went on to call the federal action “disrespectful.”
“Why would you do that? It’s unbelievably disrespectful. It’s a provocative act. They’re talking about disorder in Los Angeles and they are the source of the disorder,” she claimed.
But her outrage rang hollow. Los Angeles is a sanctuary city precisely because of leaders like Bass, who shield criminal illegals from ICE while ordinary residents are left to deal with the consequences.
Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin dismissed Bass’s accusations as baseless.
“Mayor Bass must be misinformed. Our law enforcement operations are about enforcing the law – not about Gavin Newsom,” McLaughlin posted on X.
She further explained that Customs and Border Protection “patrols all areas of Los Angeles every day with over 40 teams on the ground to make LA safe.”
The operation sent a clear signal: California’s sanctuary policies will not shield illegal criminals under Trump’s administration.
Since Trump returned to the White House, more than 56,000 illegal aliens have been detained as of August 1st – with nearly one-third carrying prior criminal convictions. These aren’t the “asylum seekers” Democrats love to glorify. These are offenders who prey on American citizens.
Newsom tried to regain control by lashing out at Trump, calling the operation “pretty sick and pathetic” and claiming it showed “the authoritarian tendencies of the president.”
But no amount of finger-pointing could hide what happened: federal authorities outplayed him, right in the middle of his political theater.
Bovino had already warned Fox News that he intended to “go even harder in LA” after Bass’s earlier criticism of ICE. Last week, he proved he meant every word.
The images quickly spread online, with conservatives celebrating the takedown of Newsom’s carefully planned stunt.
“I’m laughing ICE showed up at Gavin Newsom’s press conference and started arresting illegal aliens,” one user, Farm Girl Carrie, posted on X, adding an American flag emoji.
The moment highlighted the deep disconnect between Democrat leaders obsessed with political maps and a federal government determined to secure the border.
While Newsom ranted about redistricting inside, federal agents outside reminded Americans what real law enforcement looks like.
And in that showdown, Newsom came out humiliated.
