The contrast is difficult to ignore.
Joe Biden spent years rejecting suggestions that he would intervene in Hunter’s legal troubles. Then, after his son was convicted in federal court and pleaded guilty to tax offenses, the president reversed course and issued a sweeping pardon.
The pardon did not merely cover the specific cases that had already reached court.
It covered potential federal offenses Hunter Biden may have committed over a period stretching from January 1, 2014, through December 1, 2024.
That extraordinary ten-year window became a defining feature of the controversy.
Hunter Biden Escaped Serious Federal Penalties
Hunter Biden’s legal troubles had produced two major federal cases.
The first involved his purchase of a firearm. Prosecutors accused him of falsely stating on a federal form that he was not an unlawful user of controlled substances when he purchased the gun.
He was ultimately convicted on three federal firearm-related charges.
The potential penalties were substantial.
Hunter later faced an entirely separate tax case involving nine federal counts, including three felonies. Prosecutors alleged that he failed to pay more than $1.4 million in taxes while spending large sums on an extravagant lifestyle.
Those charges carried the possibility of significant prison time.
Yet Hunter never had to serve that sentence.
His father’s pardon erased the federal consequences of the cases and extended considerably beyond them.
The political controversy became even more intense because the Biden White House had repeatedly denied that such an intervention would happen.
Following the 2024 election, then-White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was asked whether President Biden would pardon his son.
Her response was unequivocal:
“We’ve been asked that question multiple times. Our answer stands, which is no.”
Only weeks later, Joe Biden issued the sweeping pardon.
The decision immediately sparked accusations that the president had broken his promise and created a special exception for his own family.
The Pardon Covered Hunter’s Foreign Business Dealings
The breadth of the pardon also drew attention because it encompassed the years when Hunter Biden was involved in lucrative overseas business ventures.
Among the most controversial was his position on the board of Burisma, a Ukrainian energy company.
Hunter reportedly received substantial compensation from the company while his father was serving as vice president and the Obama administration was deeply involved in U.S. policy toward Ukraine.
Questions about Hunter’s foreign business relationships became a recurring political issue during Joe Biden’s political career.
Republicans also highlighted millions of dollars in payments connected to foreign nationals and business interests, including a reported $3.5 million payment involving the wife of Moscow’s former mayor.
The Biden family repeatedly denied that Joe Biden personally benefited from wrongdoing.
Nevertheless, Hunter’s foreign business dealings remained politically explosive because of his father’s position and the administration’s foreign-policy responsibilities.
The sweeping pardon ensured that potential federal criminal exposure relating to that period was no longer hanging over Hunter Biden.
Now, years after becoming one of the most politically controversial figures in Washington, Hunter Biden is apparently considering an even more astonishing possibility.
The presidency.
Hunter Biden Hints at a Presidential Run
During an interview with radio host John Catsimatidis, Hunter Biden reportedly discussed the possibility of seeking the White House and suggested that an endorsement could influence his decision.
He also spoke positively about California Gov. Gavin Newsom, one of the Democratic Party’s frequently discussed potential presidential contenders.
Hunter Biden then offered a message that would sound familiar coming from almost any presidential candidate.
He said he wants “the next president to commit to one thing: to commit to adhering to the rule of law. To commit to the idea that we believe in this constitutional republic and the aspirations of normal Americans.”
He continued:
“I truly, truly want whoever is our president to succeed. But particularly succeed in keeping this country safe. That’s their primary responsibility,”
Hunter also identified addiction as one of his major concerns, saying his focus “is the 50 million Americans that are still suffering, sick … with their addictions.”
His comments come after he has publicly discussed his own battle with addiction and celebrated seven and a half years of sobriety.
That accomplishment deserves recognition.
But political leadership is a different matter.
The Democrats’ 2028 Problem
Hunter Biden’s potential political ambitions present Democrats with an extraordinary image problem.
The party spent years portraying the rule of law and the integrity of American institutions as central issues in the fight against Donald Trump.
Yet Hunter Biden is now discussing presidential politics after his own father intervened to wipe away the federal legal consequences surrounding his son.
That does not automatically make Hunter Biden unqualified to speak about public policy.
But it does make the timing of his lecture about the “rule of law” difficult to overlook.
His sobriety is an accomplishment.
It is not, by itself, presidential experience.
His business career is not the same thing as governing.
And receiving a sweeping presidential pardon from one’s own father is certainly not a traditional qualification for the Oval Office.
Fox News host Jesse Watters captured the absurdity with a joke about Democrats finding their “dream ticket.”
He was joking.
But the underlying political contradiction is no laughing matter.
Democrats spent years telling Americans that the survival of the republic was at stake and that no one should be above the law.
Now one of the people most directly rescued from federal prosecution by a presidential pardon is publicly discussing what the next president should do.
That disconnect is likely to follow Hunter Biden anywhere he goes politically.
If Hunter Biden really intends to pursue the presidency, he will have to answer questions about his business dealings, his criminal convictions, his father’s decision to pardon him, and the unprecedented scope of that pardon.
Most importantly, he will have to explain why Americans should accept a lecture about the rule of law from someone whose own federal legal exposure was erased by a president who happened to be his father.
For Democrats looking toward 2028, that could prove to be a very difficult argument to make.
