The mystery surrounding the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie took an unexpected turn after human remains were uncovered in the Arizona desert near her home.
For a brief moment, many feared investigators had finally found a tragic answer in one of the state’s most closely watched missing person cases.
But what authorities uncovered turned out to be something entirely different.
Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of NBC “Today” host Savannah Guthrie, vanished under alarming circumstances earlier this year. Investigators believe she was abducted from her residence in Tucson’s Catalina Foothills during the early morning hours of February 1.
Since then, law enforcement agencies, volunteers, and private citizens have searched relentlessly for clues.
That search effort produced a startling discovery in early May when human skeletal remains were located in the rugged Sonoran Desert less than five miles from Guthrie’s home.
