Party leaders insisted it was an outdated Senate rule standing in the way of their agenda. Activists demanded its destruction. Progressive lawmakers argued it had to go if Democrats wanted to transform the country.
Now one of the party’s most recognizable senators is admitting they got it wrong.
And his comments are creating a problem for Democrats that won’t be easy to explain away.
Fetterman Makes an Admission Few Politicians Ever Make
When Senator John Fetterman first ran for office in 2022, he was one of the loudest voices calling for the elimination of the Senate filibuster.
At the time, Democrats were desperate to pass sweeping federal election legislation. The proposal stalled because Senate rules required more than a simple majority to advance.
Fetterman sided with activists who wanted to change the rules.
