In Washington, D.C.—where criminals roam freely and law-abiding citizens constantly find themselves fighting their own government—another unbelievable story is unfolding. A local homeowner has been forced to watch a squatter live inside her house for almost a full year, thanks to the city’s notoriously lopsided tenant laws that now seem to protect everyone except actual property owners.
The ordeal has pushed homeowner Rochanne Douglas to emotional and financial exhaustion, while the woman accused of squatting—identified as Shadija Romero—continues relaxing inside the home without a lease, without permission, and without consequence.
Romero originally booked the property for a brief stay through Airbnb—just 32 days, ending March 29. But as soon as she crossed the 30-day threshold, which activates D.C.’s tenant protections, she suddenly proclaimed herself a “resident” and refused to leave, according to 7News.
“I never gave her any tenancy,” Douglas explained. “I never gave her a lease.”
