A prominent Democratic donor is breaking with her party to support Republican Bruce Blakeman in his bid to unseat New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, giving the GOP challenger a notable boost as the 2026 governor’s race enters a critical stretch.
Bonnie Englebardt Lautenberg, the widow of late Democratic Sen. Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey, is set to host a fundraiser for Blakeman, according to the New York Post. Her decision is drawing attention because of her long history of supporting Democratic candidates.
“It’s the talk of the Hamptons,” said one Democrat who expressed surprise. “It’s a good get for Bruce.”
