A habitual offender got a fireworks show he didn’t bargain for on Independence Day after barging into a Florida home he wrongly assumed was empty. Instead of walking away with stolen goods, he left with a gunshot wound and a trip to jail—thanks to a fast-acting and armed citizen who refused to be a victim.
Mitchell Platt, 37, thought the Fourth of July would be the perfect time to find an easy break-in while families were distracted with fireworks and cookouts. But when he zeroed in on a house along Deer Run Road in Osceola County, he had no idea he was picking a home with a patriotic family willing to fight back.
Deputies responded around 8:30 p.m. to a call reporting a burglary in progress. What they found was a wounded suspect on the floor—and a brave son who had taken matters into his own hands to stop a criminal in his tracks.
According to reports, the homeowner’s son arrived to find the back door wide open. Unlike most who might call 911 and wait outside, this young man stepped inside to investigate.
