“What they’re saying is they don’t want to lose their friends,” Gutfeld explained.
Trump’s “Common Sense” Strategy Exposes the Left
But Gutfeld didn’t stop with the media. He turned his fire on D.C.’s Democrat leadership — especially Mayor Muriel Bowser — for their incoherent response to Trump’s law-and-order policies.
“I thought it was interesting that she said, the mayor says, how do we get to the other side of this or him? What, what is that, I mean, the other, you can’t get to the other side of common sense,” he observed.
For Gutfeld, the problem is simple: Democrats are boxed in by their own ideology. They scream “authoritarian” at every practical solution, whether it’s more police on the streets, juvenile arrests, or curfews. But Trump has claimed the “lane of common sense” — and there’s no effective counter to it.
“Trump, whether it’s border or crime or trans invading sports, he takes the lane of common sense. So they’re stuck with these narratives because they can’t all, what alternative do you have to common sense? There is none,” Gutfeld said.
Trump Federalizes D.C. Police
This week, Trump announced he was putting the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department under federal authority and deploying 800 National Guard troops to restore order in the capital.
The move is historic. It’s the first time a U.S. president has federalized the city’s police force. And according to Army officials, roughly 100 to 200 troops at a time will directly support law enforcement with logistics, security, and patrol presence.
Trump also signaled he intends to extend the federal takeover beyond the initial 30-day period, telling reporters: “We’re going to be essentially crime-free.”
The Left’s Real Fear
Gutfeld identified the nightmare scenario keeping Democrats awake at night: What if Trump’s plan actually works?
“What happens when you remove the narrative, the narrative of authoritarianism. If you took that out and just watch what was happening, it was just crime fighting. That’s all it is. It’s an apolitical act that we all agree with fighting crime. It’s common sense,” he said.
“They know that it works. The fear is that it will work. And if it works, God help the left because success is a threat to the preservation of their failures,” Gutfeld concluded.
A Blueprint for America
That’s the heart of the issue. If Trump can fix Washington, D.C.’s crime crisis with straightforward, no-nonsense measures, voters in cities like Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles will start asking why their leaders can’t do the same.
Democrats have long argued that crime is an unsolvable issue tied to poverty, sociology, and systemic factors that require endless spending and bureaucracy. But Trump is proving that the solution is far simpler: enforce the law.
If his strategy succeeds, it could reshape the political landscape for years. And as Gutfeld warned, “success is a threat to the preservation of their failures.”
