Court documents and reports now paint a disturbing picture of just how close Ortega-Lopez was to the Cano family. Videos circulating on social media allegedly show the illegal gang suspect hanging out casually with the judge and his wife — even passing around a firearm in one chilling clip.
This was no accident. According to Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), Ortega-Lopez had been under scrutiny since January 2025, when an anonymous tip suggested he was living in Las Cruces, illegally armed, and affiliated with a known criminal syndicate. The tip turned out to be spot-on.
Agents say Ortega-Lopez illegally crossed the U.S. border at Eagle Pass, Texas, on December 15, 2023. He was briefly detained by Border Patrol — and then released just three days later due to overcrowding. That reckless decision allowed him to travel freely to New Mexico, where he settled in behind Judge Cano’s house.
On February 28, agents raided the property and arrested Ortega-Lopez. Four firearms were recovered from a neighboring home belonging to April Cano, the judge’s daughter, according to court filings. “Photos and videos posted on Facebook last December” allegedly showed Ortega-Lopez handling and firing those weapons.
Ortega-Lopez admitted to possession and use of the guns, according to the criminal complaint. He has been charged with “being an illegal alien in possession of a firearm or ammunition,” a serious federal offense that carries up to 15 years in prison. He will remain behind bars until trial.
Despite the gravity of the situation, Judge Cano made no mention of the arrest in his resignation letter, dated March 3. He simply wrote: “Working with each of you has been a very rewarding experience for which I will remain eternally grateful.” His last day of court hearings was March 21.
It didn’t take long for the pieces to fall into place. Cano’s sudden exit, the raid, and the viral footage of the judge mingling with an illegal alien gang suspect — all coming together in what could be a devastating blow to the state’s Democrat political machine.
Just Released: Trump White House Collector’s Bobblehead!
Cano, a former police officer turned judge, was first elected in 2010 and went on to win four straight terms — all unopposed. His ties to Ortega-Lopez now raise serious questions about just how deep the rot goes in local government.
Prosecutors are now pressing to keep Ortega-Lopez detained, calling him “a flight risk and a danger to the community.” Given his suspected gang affiliation and social media evidence, their case appears strong.
It’s unclear whether the Cano family could face legal scrutiny themselves. But with weapons found at multiple family-owned properties and video evidence circulating online, the spotlight is only growing hotter.
This isn’t just another immigration scandal. It’s a glaring example of how dangerous border failures and weak enforcement can enable foreign criminals to embed themselves — even in the homes of judges sworn to uphold the law.
