After years of closing American factories and sending jobs overseas, Barra is suddenly singing the praises of Donald Trump’s “America First” vision. But many on the Right see straight through her last-ditch effort to stay in Washington’s good graces.
Barra’s Sudden About-Face
Mary Barra has held the reins at GM since 2014. During that time, she’s overseen shuttered plants in Michigan, Ohio, and Maryland — leaving thousands of workers jobless. Yet with Donald Trump back in the White House, Barra is trying to reinvent herself as a champion of American manufacturing.
“I’m actually looking forward to working with the president and with the administration, because I think we can grow the importance of the auto industry and manufacturing, and so I think there’s a lot that we have in common,” Barra told reporters in December 2024.
