The Georgia Supreme Court has handed down a major ruling, denying a request by Republicans to reinstate a set of controversial new election rules. These rules, passed by allies of former President Donald Trump, were aimed at tightening election oversight in the crucial battleground state. As early voting has already begun in Georgia, the court’s decision is seen as a significant win for Democrats and voting rights groups, many of whom had filed lawsuits against the regulations.
CNN reported that the plaintiffs argued the state election board overstepped its authority in implementing these rules. The court’s order prevents the enforcement of seven specific provisions, including a requirement that county election officials conduct a “reasonable inquiry” into election results before certifying them. Another rule that would have been enforced would have allowed officials to examine all election-related documentation before certification.

Some of the other rules targeted in these lawsuits would have required hand-counting ballots at each polling place on Election Day, allowed greater access for poll watchers, and mandated 24-hour video surveillance of drop boxes during early voting. These measures, touted by Trump’s allies as election integrity protections, were criticized by opponents as unnecessary and overly burdensome.
