In a bold rebuttal to mainstream media narratives, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard dropped the hammer on reports downplaying the success of last week’s U.S. airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear infrastructure. Gabbard accused The New York Times and CNN of cherry-picking classified material to mislead the public and smear President Donald Trump’s decisive foreign policy.
Both outlets ran with “anonymous sources” supposedly close to early Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) briefings, claiming the strikes caused only “limited” damage. According to their coverage, U.S. intelligence assessments hinted that Iran’s nuclear capabilities weren’t significantly affected, contrary to what Trump had touted.
CNN wrote, “The analysis of the damage to the sites and the impact of the strikes on Iran’s nuclear ambitions is ongoing, and could change as more intelligence becomes available. But the early findings are at odds with President Donald Trump’s repeated claims that the strikes ‘completely and totally obliterated’ Iran’s nuclear enrichment facilities.”
They leaned heavily on one source allegedly familiar with a preliminary DIA evaluation. Their reporting specifically suggested that Fordow—one of Iran’s major enrichment sites targeted with bunker-buster bombs—suffered only surface-level damage and could be quickly rebuilt.
