Fetterman, once hailed as the progressive face of Pennsylvania Democrats, pulled off a contentious primary victory in 2022 against former U.S. Rep. Conor Lamb. That bruising battle left a mark on the party. But since taking office, the senator has charted his own path, openly criticizing the far-left wing on multiple high-profile issues.
Among the flashpoints: Fetterman has openly clashed with progressives on the Israel-Palestine conflict, hammered his party over the border crisis, and raised alarms about the rising cost of living. Those moves — which align more closely with moderate and even conservative voters — have made him a lightning rod for the left.
