For example, it remains unclear exactly how much money was allegedly owed, whether there was a disagreement over the quality or completion of the work, and what terms the homeowner and contractor had agreed upon before construction began.

The dispute also arrives months after another viral confrontation involving a Hispanic work crew and allegations surrounding immigration enforcement.
In March, a Maryland homeowner became the subject of a separate viral controversy after six Guatemalan roofing workers were detained by ICE while working on a residential property in Cambridge. A coworker, Bryan Polanco, livestreamed the incident and accused the homeowner of contacting immigration authorities as the roofing project was nearing completion.
According to reports at the time, the roofing project was worth approximately $10,000, and the workers had spent several days on the job before immigration agents arrived. Video from the incident showed federal agents at the property and the workers being detained.
That Maryland case generated its own fierce debate over whether immigration enforcement had been used as part of a dispute over payment. However, reporting also noted uncertainty surrounding exactly how the authorities were alerted, making it important not to treat allegations as established fact.
The Illinois fence controversy is different in a crucial respect: there is currently no independent confirmation that ICE was contacted at all.
