Alberto Carvalho, the controversial Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) superintendent, spent the past year openly instructing his school police to “interfere and intervene” against federal immigration agents. But when the FBI arrived, there was no turning them away.

Early Thursday morning, federal agents executed coordinated search warrants at Carvalho’s San Pedro home, LAUSD headquarters in downtown Los Angeles, and a Florida property linked to a longtime associate. Sources describe the multi-state operation as a financial investigation focused squarely on Carvalho himself.

$6.2 Million AI Contract Collapses in Three Months

The inquiry centers on a $6.2 million contract Carvalho awarded to AllHere Education, a Boston-based startup promising an AI chatbot named “Ed” to curb student absenteeism. The deal drew immediate attention due to its high-profile launch.

Carvalho unveiled “Ed” at a San Diego conference in March 2024, with Governor Gavin Newsom and Mayor Karen Bass at his side. He called it “unprecedented in American public education.” But the excitement didn’t last long. Within three months, AllHere furloughed all staff and declared bankruptcy.
