Federal authorities have remained tight-lipped about the case. The FBI has not issued a public statement outlining the specific charges, and officials at the Fayette County Detention Center confirmed only that Kriisa is being held on federal matters. Because the investigation is being handled at the federal level, jail officials declined to provide any additional information.
Kriisa entered college basketball with significant expectations after building an impressive résumé overseas. The son of former professional basketball player Valmo Kriisa, he was named after former Arizona Wildcats star and NBA champion Steve Kerr. His basketball journey began in Estonia, where he joined the BC Tartu youth program around the age of 12 before making his professional debut for Tartu Ülikool at just 15 years old during the 2016-17 season.
Before arriving in the United States, Kriisa gained valuable experience throughout Europe. He spent time with Germany’s Brose Bamberg organization before continuing his development with Lithuanian powerhouse Žalgiris and its reserve squad. During the 2019-20 season, he also played on loan with Prienai and made his EuroLeague debut on October 25, 2019, giving him experience against some of the continent’s top competition.
His NCAA career officially began when he committed to the University of Arizona in April 2020. Over three seasons with the Wildcats, Kriisa established himself as one of the team’s primary playmakers and appeared in multiple NCAA Tournament runs. Arizona entered the 2022 tournament as a No. 1 seed before being eliminated in the Sweet 16 by Houston.
Kriisa’s path in Tucson was not without uncertainty. Following the firing of head coach Sean Miller, he briefly entered the NCAA transfer portal before ultimately returning to Arizona under new head coach Tommy Lloyd. By his junior season, he had become a reliable contributor, averaging 9.9 points and 5.1 assists per game across 35 contests.
Following the 2022-23 season, Kriisa transferred to West Virginia University, announcing his decision on April 5, 2023. His arrival came during a period of major transition for the Mountaineers program, which later saw longtime head coach Bob Huggins resign before the season began. Although Kriisa briefly reconsidered his future by entering the transfer portal again, he ultimately remained with West Virginia.
Even before stepping onto the court for the Mountaineers, Kriisa encountered NCAA eligibility issues.
Prior to the start of the season, West Virginia announced that he would be suspended for the first nine games of the regular season after acknowledging he had accepted impermissible benefits while previously enrolled at Arizona.
“In late August 2023, West Virginia University learned of a potential eligibility concern for men’s basketball transfer student-athlete Kerr Kriisa, who admitted to receiving impermissible benefits while enrolled at the University of Arizona,” the university said at the time. “As a result of his actions, Kriisa will miss nine (9) 2023-2024 regular season games as part of his eligibility reinstatement.”
Despite the suspension, Kriisa became one of West Virginia’s most productive players once he returned to the lineup. He appeared in 23 games during the 2023-24 season, averaging 11.0 points and 4.7 assists per contest while finishing among the team’s leaders in three-point shooting.
He later transferred once again, this time to the University of Kentucky for the 2024-25 season. However, his final year of college basketball was cut short after a foot injury limited him to just nine appearances before ending his season.
Following the conclusion of his NCAA eligibility, Kriisa returned home to Estonia, signing with Tartu Ülikool to continue his professional career in the Korvpalli Meistriliiga and the Estonian-Latvian Basketball League beginning in 2026. He had also been announced as a member of La Familia, the University of Kentucky alumni team scheduled to compete in the 2026 edition of The Basketball Tournament, the winner-take-all event featuring a $2 million grand prize.
Now, however, Kriisa’s basketball future has been thrown into uncertainty as the federal investigation moves forward. With few details publicly available, attention is expected to shift to West Virginia, where court proceedings could reveal the nature of the allegations and determine what legal challenges lie ahead for the former college basketball standout.
