FBI Just Sent Hundreds to a 2020 Election Probe

The bureau has also established an aggressive production schedule. Every intelligence analyst assigned to the investigation has reportedly been instructed to complete 708 records checks before July 17. To meet the deadline, officials have authorized overtime work, including weekends and federal holidays.

The memo makes clear that the assignment comes directly from FBI leadership.

“In support of the Director’s Office priority effort, the Directorate of Intelligence (DI) and Criminal Division are requesting all FBI field offices to immediately surge support to an FBI Atlanta priority investigation,” the memo stated.

The sweeping order reportedly came under the direction of FBI Director Kash Patel, who instructed field offices nationwide to contribute personnel to the expanding investigation.

One U.S. official familiar with the operation described the purpose of the analysts’ work in straightforward terms.

“looking for derogatory information is the short answer. The idea is to build a case. Look at associations between people, look into their social media, their business activity, travel, contact with other investigative subjects.”

The FBI has declined to publicly discuss the memorandum or comment on the expanded deployment of personnel.

The latest surge follows a series of investigative actions that began earlier this year. In January 2026, FBI agents executed a court-approved search warrant at a Fulton County election storage facility, where they seized more than 600 boxes of election-related materials connected to the 2020 presidential contest.

Among the items collected were physical ballots, digital ballot images, voter registration records, tabulation documents, and other election materials that investigators believed were relevant to the federal inquiry.

The investigation itself reportedly traces back to a referral submitted by Kurt Olsen, who at the time served as a presidentially appointed White House official responsible for election integrity matters. A Department of Justice timeline released under court order indicates that Olsen forwarded the referral during the first week of January 2026.

The FBI moved quickly after receiving the referral. According to the Justice Department timeline, an Atlanta-based special agent was assigned to review the matter the following day. Less than a week later, on January 14, the bureau officially opened a full federal investigation.

Investigators then prepared an investigative summary that ultimately served as the foundation for the affidavit supporting the search warrant executed on January 28.

At the time of the operation, the FBI confirmed only that agents were carrying out lawful investigative activity.

“executing a court authorized law enforcement action”

The search took place at the Fulton County Election Hub and Operation Center located in Union City, Georgia.

Justice Department officials have maintained that the investigation is being conducted independently and have rejected suggestions that prosecutorial decisions are being driven by political considerations. According to department officials, criminal investigations are not initiated simply because of presidential preferences.

The underlying investigation centers on the administration of the 2020 presidential election in Fulton County, where Joe Biden defeated Donald Trump by 11,779 votes. That election has remained the subject of intense legal, political, and public scrutiny for years.

With hundreds of additional intelligence analysts now joining the effort, the FBI appears to be significantly expanding its review of records, communications, financial information, travel histories, business relationships, and other materials connected to individuals under federal scrutiny. Whether the expanded investigative push ultimately results in criminal charges or other legal action remains to be seen, but the bureau’s latest directive signals that the Fulton County investigation has become one of the FBI’s highest-priority ongoing cases.
