Now, in 2024, critics argue that this same “Tyranny of the Narrative” is alive and well. As one journalist who attended the briefing noted, “The $80 billion a year Deep State IC is filled with many unknown characters who solely seek to perpetuate the gravy train.” This comment reflects the growing skepticism that elements within the intelligence apparatus are more focused on maintaining their own power and influence rather than ensuring the integrity of U.S. elections.

Following the briefing, one glaring issue arose in the ODNI’s fact sheet: the omission of federal election laws governing non-citizen voting. Specifically, 18 USC 611, which prohibits non-U.S. citizens from voting, was notably absent from the discussion. This omission is particularly concerning given the ongoing debate over illegal immigrants being added to voter rolls under the 1993 Motor Voter Act. According to critics, the failure to enforce 18 USC 611 has allowed many non-citizens to vote unlawfully.

When pressed about this during the briefing, the ODNI representatives had no comment. This silence has fueled suspicions that election integrity is not being fully prioritized by the intelligence community. For some, this was seen as confirmation that the system is rigged, with federal authorities turning a blind eye to the illegal participation of non-citizens in U.S. elections.
The shadow of Russian interference loomed large during the briefing. Despite the conclusions of John Durham’s 2023 report, which discredited the “Russia, Russia, Russia” narrative surrounding the 2016 election, the intelligence community once again pointed to Russia as a major player in the 2024 race. However, the evidence presented was thin. The narrative suggested that Russia was attempting to discredit Kamala Harris, implying that by doing so, they were indirectly supporting Donald Trump.

This narrative, however, was met with skepticism. As one attendee pointed out, “The Russians simply want hate and discontent, they aren’t supporting a candidate.” The sentiment echoes a broader understanding that Russia’s primary goal has long been to sow discord within American society, rather than actively favoring any one political figure.

Another key focus of the briefing was Iran. The ODNI identified Iran as a significant foreign actor seeking to interfere in the 2024 election, allegedly in favor of Vice President Kamala Harris. However, the reasons behind this conclusion were not well-explained, leaving some wondering if there was more behind the scenes. What was even more puzzling was the omission of any substantial mention of China. Despite China’s well-documented efforts to influence U.S. elections and its deep ties with Iran, the ODNI downplayed its role, stating only that China had been involved in congressional races rather than the presidential election.
This apparent disconnect between China’s role in global affairs and its alleged non-involvement in the 2024 presidential race has led to further speculation. Critics argue that China’s influence is far-reaching and that it is impossible for the regime not to have a hand in the presidential race if Iran is involved, especially given their strategic partnership.

One of the most glaring omissions from the briefing was any discussion of TikTok’s influence on U.S. elections. Despite bipartisan support for the shutdown of TikTok due to its ties to the Chinese Communist Party, the platform was barely mentioned. TikTok, often referred to as “digital fentanyl,” has become a major vehicle for spreading misinformation and manipulating public opinion. Its omission from the briefing further raised concerns about whether the intelligence community is fully committed to tackling all threats to election security.
The October 7 briefing was intended to reassure the public that the U.S. intelligence community is working diligently to protect the integrity of the 2024 election. However, it left many with more questions than answers. With narratives of Russian interference, Iranian assassins, and China’s alleged non-involvement swirling, the briefing seemed to fuel existing doubts rather than quell them.
As the election draws closer, many will be watching closely to see whether these concerns are addressed or if the “Tyranny of the Narrative” will continue to overshadow genuine efforts to ensure a fair and secure election.
