Trump made it clear where his administration stands. He declared that the federal government only recognizes two genders and signed an executive order banning men from competing in women’s sports—a move that forced the NCAA to update its policies.
But despite the clear national sentiment, some Democrat leaders refuse to follow the new directive.
Tensions erupted after a biological male, identifying as a girl, won first place in women’s pole vaulting at Maine’s Class B State Championship. The controversy prompted Trump to take decisive action.
On Thursday, Trump announced that he would withhold all federal funding from Maine if the state continued allowing biological males to compete in women’s sports.
Then on Friday, during the National Governors Association meeting, Trump took the fight straight to Governor Mills.
From the podium, Trump turned to the audience and asked, “Is Maine here?” Then, locking eyes with Mills, he demanded, “The Governor of Maine, are you not going to comply with it?”

Trump reminded Mills that even in her left-leaning state, most people agree with him. “And by the way, your population, even though it is somewhat liberal, although I did very well there, your population doesn’t want men playing in women’s sports,” he told her. “You better comply because otherwise you’re not getting any federal funding.”
Mills wasn’t backing down either. “We’ll see you in court,” she snapped.
Trump’s response? “Good, I’ll see you in court. I look forward to that, that should be a real easy one.” And in a final jab, he warned, “Enjoy your life after Governor, because I don’t think you’ll be in elected politics.”
Despite the executive order and Trump’s threat to pull funding, the Maine Principals’ Association has refused to back down. They declared they will continue allowing biological males to compete in women’s sports.
Mills defended the decision, stating, “This is not just about who can compete on the athletic field, this is about whether a President can force compliance with his will, without regard for the rule of law that governs our nation. I believe he cannot.”
But Trump’s administration isn’t wasting time. The Department of Education and Department of Agriculture have already launched Title IX violation investigations—a move that could cost Maine a staggering $280 million in federal aid.
