A former New Jersey mayor who recently pleaded guilty to driving under the influence while her young child was in the vehicle is now facing another legal battle—this time involving allegations that false signatures were used to help place her on the Democratic primary ballot.
Gina LaPlaca, the former mayor of Lumberton Township, was charged Tuesday alongside her husband, Jason Carty, in connection with an allegedly fraudulent nominating petition. LaPlaca remains a member of the Lumberton Township Committee, although her bid to retain her seat in the June Democratic primary ultimately failed.
According to the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office, LaPlaca faces charges including making a false statement under oath, knowingly filing a false petition, tampering with public records or information, and falsifying or tampering with records. Carty faces charges related to allegedly filing a false petition and tampering with public records and records.
