Trump did not wait long to spotlight the issue. In a video shared publicly, workers were shown beginning cleanup operations at the Reflecting Pool. The footage, paired with dramatic music, underscored what Trump framed as a stark contrast between neglect and action.
“This is the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool before Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum and I fix it,” Trump said. “Study it hard because you won’t be seeing this Biden filth and incompetence much longer.”
Days later, Trump doubled down in a Truth Social post, making the effort official and directly calling out the previous administration.
“Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum and I are working on fixing the absolutely filthy Reflecting Pool between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. This work was supposed to be done by the Biden Administration, but Sleepy Joe doesn’t know what ‘CLEAN’ or proper maintenance is — The President and Secretary do!”
The restoration effort is part of a broader initiative launched early in Trump’s current term. In March 2025, he signed an executive order aimed at improving conditions across Washington, D.C., focusing on public safety, cleanliness, and preservation of federal land.
The order directed federal agencies, including the National Park Service, to accelerate maintenance, remove graffiti, clear encampments, and restore monuments that had fallen into disrepair. Interior Secretary Burgum followed with directives to ensure compliance, signaling a more aggressive approach to managing the nation’s capital.
In addition, thousands of National Guard personnel from multiple states were deployed to assist with operations tied to beautification and infrastructure improvements. The administration framed the move as necessary to restore dignity and order to key public spaces.
Trump made his expectations clear during remarks to law enforcement officials, stating that Washington would soon reflect the pride of the nation it represents.
“By the end of the year, it’s going to be beautiful,” Trump said. “We’re going to have the best capital ever.”
Beyond politics, the Reflecting Pool carries deep historical significance. Constructed in the early 1920s, it has served as the backdrop for some of the most defining moments in American history. Most notably, it was the site where Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech to a crowd of more than 250,000 people during the March on Washington.
That legacy is precisely why critics of the previous administration argue the condition of the site mattered so deeply. For them, the issue goes beyond maintenance. It touches on how the country preserves its history and honors its most sacred spaces.
Supporters of the current effort say the cleanup represents more than just infrastructure repair. They see it as a statement about priorities and respect for national heritage.
As restoration crews continue their work, the Reflecting Pool has once again become a focal point, not just of reflection, but of a broader debate over leadership, stewardship, and the meaning of preserving America’s most iconic landmarks.
