California Gov. Gavin Newsom has spent years traveling overseas as part of his official duties, with some of those expenses covered through the California State Protocol Foundation.
Now federal prosecutors want to take a much closer look at how that system worked.
New subpoenas issued in early September are seeking six years of records connected to the nonprofit, including information about donors, fundraising, Newsom’s international travel and certain expenditures involving his residence, living costs and personal expenses.
The subpoenas explicitly state that the requested material is connected to a criminal investigation in the Eastern District of California.
