DOE Launches Probe Into Maine After Fiery Trump Showdown!

“If the president attempts to unilaterally deprive Maine school children of the benefit of federal funding, my administration and the attorney general will take all appropriate and necessary legal action to restore that funding and the academic opportunity it provides,” she added.

Trump, unwilling to let the challenge slide, addressed Mills directly during the NGA meeting, calling her out on the issue.

“Is the governor of Maine here?” Trump asked.

When Mills confirmed her presence, Trump pressed her on whether she intended to comply with his executive order.

“I am complying with state and federal laws,” she responded.

Trump fired back, making his position crystal clear. “Well, we are the federal law. You better do it. You better do it because you’re not going to get any federal funding at all if you don’t.”

Trump’s Warning: ‘Your State’s Population Doesn’t Want This’

The former president didn’t stop there. He reminded Mills that most Mainers oppose allowing men in women’s sports.

“By the way…your (state’s) population doesn’t want men playing in women’s sports. So you better comply because otherwise, you’re not getting any federal funding,” Trump warned.

Mills, attempting to appear unfazed, responded with a legal threat: “We will see you in court.”

Trump, in typical fashion, dismissed her challenge with ease. “Good. That should be a real easy (case) one,” he said. “And enjoy your life after governor because I don’t think you’ll be in elected politics.”

Biden’s DOE Wastes No Time Going After Maine

Not long after the confrontation, the DOE announced a federal investigation into Maine’s education system. The agency’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) sent a letter to Maine’s Department of Education Commissioner Pender Makin, stating that it was launching a “directed investigation” over allegations that Maine allows male athletes to compete in girls’ sports and denies female athletes access to female-only facilities.

The DOE also announced a separate investigation into Maine School Administrative District #51 (MSAD #51), specifically targeting Greely High School for allegedly permitting a male student to compete in girls’ sports.

Acting Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Craig Trainor didn’t hold back in his statement, making it clear that Maine is now under federal scrutiny.

“Maine would have you believe that it has no choice in how it treats women and girls in athletics – that is, that it must follow its state laws and allow male athletes to compete against women and girls. Let me be clear: If Maine wants to continue to receive federal funds from the Education Department, it has to follow Title IX. If it wants to forgo federal funds and continue to trample the rights of its young female athletes, that, too, is its choice. OCR will do everything in its power to ensure taxpayers are not funding blatant civil rights violators.”

The Fallout: What’s Next for Maine?

With federal funding now at stake, Maine is facing a tough road ahead. If the state refuses to comply, it could lose millions in education funding, putting schools and students at risk. Mills, however, seems prepared for a legal battle, even if it means defying the Trump administration and putting her state’s financial future in jeopardy.

As the fight over transgender participation in sports continues, it’s clear that the Biden administration is doubling down on its agenda—targeting any state that refuses to fall in line. The question now is whether Maine’s governor is willing to pay the price.
