In a shocking and deeply disturbing decision, Connecticut authorities have granted conditional release to a man who brutally murdered another with an axe before consuming parts of his brain and an eyeball.
Tyree Smith, who was deemed “Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity” in 2013, had been confined to Connecticut Valley Hospital in Middletown for up to 60 years following his gruesome crime. Now, the state’s Psychiatric Security Review Board has decided to set him free under structured supervision.

Smith’s victim, 43-year-old Angel Gonzalez, was found mutilated inside an abandoned building in Bridgeport in January 2012. His face and head bore horrific injuries, and authorities later discovered the shocking extent of what had occurred.
