Disney once stood for wholesome family films that generations could enjoy together. Today, the company is pushing away the very people who made its golden age possible. One of Disney’s most talented animators left Hollywood after a single word from executives made clear where the company’s priorities really were.

The man who brought Disney’s icons to life

Tom Bancroft isn’t just another name in the credits. He was the supervising animator for young Simba in The Lion King, Mushu in Mulan, and contributed to the timeless classic Aladdin. For more than a decade, Bancroft was part of the creative heartbeat that turned Disney into the global powerhouse it became in the 1990s.

But in 2000, while working on a short film about the legendary American folk hero John Henry, Bancroft ran head-first into a wall that changed the trajectory of his career. The short naturally wove in John Henry’s faith in God. During a private screening, one Disney executive used a single word to dismiss it: the religious theme made him feel “uncomfortable.”

That was the breaking point.
