In a stunning twist on immigration enforcement, the Department of Homeland Security under President Biden is launching a controversial new program aimed at accelerating deportations—not by tightening border security or enforcing immigration law, but by paying illegal immigrants to leave the country voluntarily.
The policy, expected to be officially unveiled by DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, will allow illegal migrants to opt for “self-deportation,” with the federal government footing the bill for their commercial flight back home. But the most eyebrow-raising detail? Participants may receive a $1,000 cash reward simply for proving they left.

“If you are here illegally, self-deportation is the best, safest, and most cost-effective way to leave the United States to avoid arrest,” Noem said in a statement.
Critics are already sounding the alarm over the absurdity of rewarding individuals who broke federal immigration laws. But DHS is doubling down, claiming the math works out in favor of taxpayers. According to a Fox News breakdown, the cost of detaining and processing a deportation runs about $17,500 per individual. In contrast, the new approach costs a fraction—just $4,500 when the flight and bonus are included.
