Dems Feeling Pressure After SAVE Act Twist

According to Sherrill, the registration errors occurred between June 2023 and June 2024, before she became governor and while former Gov. Phil Murphy was still in office. State officials say the problem originated within New Jersey’s Motor Vehicle System.

Individuals applying for driver’s licenses and state identification cards reportedly indicated that they were not U.S. citizens when answering questions through the system. Despite those responses, many were still registered to vote.

“These individuals answered ‘no’ when asked on a keypad whether they were a U.S. citizen when applying for drivers’ licenses and identification cards, but through no fault of their own, the system registered them anyway,” the governor stated.

Sherrill said she immediately ordered an investigation after learning of the issue and instructed election officials to remove anyone who had been improperly added to the voter rolls. She also announced that New Jersey has begun replacing the vendor responsible for administering the registration platform tied to the error.

Adding to the controversy, state officials acknowledged that a preliminary review found that fewer than 400 of those mistakenly registered individuals ultimately cast ballots.

While Democrats have attempted to characterize the incident as a technical failure, Republicans argue that the admission validates concerns they have raised for years about weaknesses in voter-registration systems.

Vance pointed directly to the situation as evidence that federal safeguards are needed.

“If only there was a way to stop this type of ‘software error’ that allowed non citizens to vote in our elections,” the vice president wrote on X. “I hope Senators @CoryBooker and @SenatorAndyKim will join us in voting to pass the SAVE America Act to ensure that only eligible American voters can participate in New Jersey elections, and all elections across the United States.”

The New Jersey revelation arrived only days after President Donald Trump delivered a nationally televised address warning that noncitizens were appearing on voter rolls throughout the country. Republicans have increasingly pointed to voter-registration irregularities as justification for stronger election-security measures.

Fueling that argument further, the Department of Homeland Security has reportedly identified as many as 35,152 possible noncitizen voter registrations in New Jersey during its review. Federal officials also flagged potential issues in other states, including California, Nevada, and Pennsylvania.

Those findings have provided fresh ammunition for Republicans who argue that concerns about voter-roll accuracy have too often been dismissed by Democrats and major media outlets.

Despite acknowledging the registration problem, Sherrill used her announcement to sharply criticize President Trump.

“As the Trump Administration tries to weaponize elections for political gain, I am ensuring we protect our elections. Let me be clear: Donald Trump has zero credibility on the issue of election integrity. For more than ten years, he has worked to undermine Americans’ faith in our elections by spreading lies about legitimate election results, attempting to overturn a free and fair election, encouraging an attack on our Capitol when he couldn’t accept the will of the voters, and defunding election security at the federal level.”

Republicans, however, focused on a different takeaway from the governor’s statement.

Individuals who explicitly indicated they were not citizens were nevertheless placed on voter rolls. Some of those individuals later voted. For election-security advocates, that represents precisely the kind of vulnerability they say the SAVE America Act is designed to address.

The White House quickly weighed in, arguing that the New Jersey situation demonstrates the urgent need for congressional action.

“This latest incident underscores the absolute necessity of the SAVE America Act. American voters deserve to have confidence that our elections are safe and secure — President Trump will never stop fighting to make that happen and all patriotic Americans should join in his effort.”

The controversy has also renewed attention on New Jersey Lt. Gov. Dale Caldwell, who serves as secretary of state. Earlier this year, Caldwell declined a Trump administration request for the state’s complete unredacted voter file. The Department of Justice subsequently filed suit in February, and that legal battle remains unresolved.

Meanwhile, Booker and Kim have not publicly responded to Vance’s challenge. Their silence is drawing increased scrutiny as Republicans continue to spotlight the issue nationwide.

For years, Democrats have argued that noncitizen voting is exceptionally rare and that election fraud concerns are often exaggerated. Republicans counter that New Jersey’s admission demonstrates that vulnerabilities can and do exist.

The debate now centers on a straightforward question: if individuals who selected “no” when asked whether they were U.S. citizens can still end up registered to vote, why oppose additional citizenship-verification safeguards?

Republicans believe the answer is equally straightforward.

Pass the SAVE America Act.

Strengthen voter-roll protections.

And ensure that only eligible American citizens are registered to vote in federal elections.

  1. Why do we have Democrats, Liberals and some Republicans that have no common sense????? They have done nothing to improve Americans lives. Then when something good comes up, they vote No. I say again, “Why do we have Democrats, Liberals, and some Republicans who do nothing good for America. While President Trump is trying to do good. How about they shut-up, and start helping. Childlike. AOC, for President. Give me a break.
