A newly disclosed voter-registration problem in New Jersey is quickly becoming a major political flashpoint, with Vice President JD Vance using the controversy to increase pressure on the state’s Democratic senators to support the SAVE America Act.
The issue erupted after New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill revealed that approximately 6,600 noncitizens were mistakenly added to the state’s voter rolls due to what officials described as a software malfunction. The disclosure immediately reignited the national debate over election integrity, voter-roll maintenance, and citizenship verification requirements.
Vance wasted little time responding. The vice president directly challenged Democratic Sens. Cory Booker and Andy Kim, urging them to support legislation that would require states to verify citizenship before registering individuals to vote in federal elections.
