Michael Madigan, the man who once wielded unchecked power over Illinois lawmakers for decades, has finally been brought to justice. On Friday, the longtime Democratic House Speaker was sentenced to 7½ years in federal prison and slapped with a $2.5 million fine after being convicted on corruption charges that shocked even the most cynical observers of the state’s political swamp.
Madigan, now 83, spent nearly 50 years manipulating the levers of government from his seat in Springfield, where he built a political machine that turned the Illinois House into his personal empire. His career began in 1971, and for almost four decades, he reigned as Speaker — the longest-serving legislative leader in U.S. history.
