In a stunning move that raised eyebrows across Washington, House Republican leaders abruptly scrapped Thursday’s legislative session and rushed into their five-week August recess a full day early. The decision, reported by Axios, comes amid a deepening internal Republican rift triggered by explosive efforts to unseal the long-hidden Jeffrey Epstein files.
Originally, lawmakers were scheduled to finish business Thursday before dispersing for the summer break. But that plan unraveled in spectacular fashion after Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) rallied GOP members behind a surprise discharge petition aimed at forcing the release of classified Epstein documents—sidestepping House Speaker Mike Johnson in the process.
The storm brewing over the Epstein disclosures hit fever pitch after Massie’s petition gained traction, reportedly securing more than 10 Republican signatures—enough to override the Speaker’s control and bring it directly to a floor vote.
Massie, teaming up with progressive Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA), vowed to bring sunlight to the scandal the executive branch has refused to expose.
