Comer went on to say: “The American people demand transparency but Dr. O’Connor would rather conceal the truth. Dr. O’Connor took the fifth when asked if he was told to lie about President Biden’s health and whether he was fit to be President of the United States.”
The hearing, which was conducted behind closed doors, turned into a political flashpoint as Republicans insisted the physician’s silence was a clear sign of something more troubling lurking behind the scenes.
“We will continue to interview more Biden White House aides to get the answers Americans deserve,” Comer added. “Congress must assess legislative solutions to prevent such a coverup from happening again.”
While Dr. O’Connor’s attorney claimed the doctor was simply protecting both his professional obligations and constitutional rights, critics on the right were quick to call foul. David Schertler, O’Connor’s attorney, said the doctor “asserted the physician-patient privilege, as well as his right under the Fifth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, in declining to answer questions from the staff of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform regarding his service as Physician to the President during the Biden Administration,” according to ABC News.
But Comer fired back, saying such behavior is “unprecedented,” and signals that the doctor has something to hide. “I think this adds more fuel to the fire that there was a cover-up,” he said.
Notably, O’Connor remained tight-lipped even as reporters waited outside the hearing, refusing to offer a single comment.
Before the hearing took place, Comer made it clear he believed Dr. O’Connor could not simply fall back on patient confidentiality in this case. “I don’t believe that he can hide behind doctor-patient confidentiality, because this is the president of the United States, and people expect the White House physician to be truthful and transparent about the president of the United States’ health,” he told The Hill.
That same outlet also reported that O’Connor invoked the Fifth Amendment on every question except when confirming his name, according to an unnamed source familiar with the deposition.
Other Republicans echoed Comer’s outrage, suggesting the silence spoke louder than any testimony ever could.
“By pleading the fifth at his deposition today, Dr. Kevin O’Connor just confirmed what we all suspected: this was a coordinated cover-up to hide the truth about Joe Biden’s condition — and who’s really been running the show behind the scenes,” Rep. William Timmons (R-SC) posted on X.
He didn’t mince words, adding, “The Biden White House misled the American people for years.”
While the Biden administration has insisted the President is mentally and physically capable of handling the job, the growing number of incidents, public gaffes, and now a doctor’s refusal to answer even basic questions only intensifies the skepticism.
This latest development has handed Republicans more ammunition as they pursue deeper investigations into what they call a “deliberate deception” of the American people. And if Wednesday’s testimony—or lack thereof—is any indication, the Biden White House may soon have more uncomfortable questions to answer.
