The files, originally declassified in 2003 but now circulating widely again on social media, contain mid-1960s discussions about federal funding for weather-related experimentation and the potential strategic value of influencing atmospheric conditions during heightened Cold War tensions with the Soviet Union.
Online reaction has been swift and, in some corners, highly speculative. A viral post on X claimed, “The CIA has been poisoning the sky and controlling the weather since 1965!”
While that assertion has fueled controversy, the actual documents do confirm that weather modification was studied as a legitimate scientific and military interest during that era.
