The key figures behind the infamous Russia hoax are feeling the pressure—and one of the biggest names just made it clear he’s not taking any chances. Former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, a central player in the narrative that falsely tied Donald Trump to the Kremlin, is now admitting on live television that he’s hired legal counsel. And it’s no wonder why—accountability might finally be knocking.
On a recent appearance with CNN’s Kaitlan Collins, Clapper revealed, “I have lawyered up,” confirming that he’s preparing for what could become a serious legal battle. This sudden move comes amid a rising wave of scrutiny over the intelligence community’s role in one of the most damaging political smears in American history.
It’s a move that screams damage control.
Despite lawyering up, Clapper remained defensive, attempting to justify his role in pushing the now-debunked Steele Dossier and Russia collusion narrative. Collins asked him if he feared that the Trump team could pursue charges, to which Clapper responded with indignation: “I don’t know of an intelligence product that was more scrutinized, more investigated than that product was by numerous people. It’s very disconcerting, it really is, and I take seriously when the President of the United States accuses me of being a participant in a treasonous conspiracy, which is ridiculous.”
