For decades, Bill and Hillary Clinton have managed to sidestep accountability while political allies closed ranks around them. Time and again, controversies came and went, and the Clintons emerged untouched. That long-running pattern, however, may finally be breaking.
This week, Washington was rocked by an unexpected development that caught even seasoned insiders off guard. House Democrats, long relied upon to shield the Clintons from scrutiny, broke ranks in a way few thought possible. The result: a dramatic shift in the House investigation into convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein and his longtime associate, Ghislaine Maxwell.
House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer made the move that changed everything. After months of stonewalling from the Clintons, Comer advanced contempt of Congress resolutions against both Bill and Hillary Clinton. To the shock of Democrat leadership, several Democrats joined Republicans to push those resolutions forward.
Nine Democrats voted to advance the contempt resolution against Bill Clinton. Three Democrats did the same regarding Hillary Clinton. The bipartisan votes sent a clear signal that the usual political protections were cracking.
