In a case that’s sending shockwaves through faith communities nationwide, two self-proclaimed church leaders from New Jersey now stand accused of using religion not to save souls—but to shackle them.

What was pitched as a house of healing turned out to be, according to federal prosecutors, a breeding ground for exploitation, abuse, and manipulation.

A Church With a Sinister Secret

Federal authorities have indicted Treva Edwards, 60, and Christine Edwards, 63, for crimes that, if proven, amount to weaponizing faith to entrap and enslave vulnerable individuals. The pair operated a so-called church, “Jesus is Lord by the Holy Ghost,” out of an apartment complex in Orange, New Jersey. But behind closed doors, prosecutors say, was a well-oiled machine of coercion and cruelty.

“The Department of Justice will not tolerate the exploitation of vulnerable individuals under the guise of faith or community,” stated Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon.
