Within moments, a simple mistake placed the children in a potentially life-threatening situation.
According to Woods, his oldest child unknowingly activated the vehicle’s lock while climbing out of the truck. Unfortunately, Woods had not yet removed the keys from inside the vehicle.
“My son climbed to the front of the truck to get out, and I didn’t realize I didn’t have my keys on me until he got out of the truck and closed the door. But as he was coming out, his hands were on the door, and he hit the lock button unknowingly.”
At first, Woods attempted to open the remaining doors, hoping another entry point would be available. But after checking the vehicle and realizing every door was locked, panic quickly set in.
The Florida heat was relentless.
Temperatures in the area hovered around 94 degrees, creating dangerous conditions inside the enclosed vehicle. Medical experts have repeatedly warned that temperatures inside parked cars can climb rapidly, placing children at extreme risk in a matter of minutes.
Woods could already see the effects.
“Just the two minutes in the truck, they were sweating really badly.”
The situation became even more alarming as his younger children began showing signs of distress.
“She was freaking out, the baby was crying, and I know she just wanted us to come in there and get her.”
With every passing second becoming more critical, Woods searched desperately for a tool that could break the truck’s window. When he couldn’t find anything suitable, he reached a simple but powerful conclusion.
“My fist will probably work.”
Without hesitation, the father began striking the glass.
The rescue was successful, but it came at a cost. Woods suffered significant cuts while smashing through the window and ultimately required emergency medical treatment.
Even so, he says the decision was never in doubt.
“In that particular time, you’re not worried about the cuts. You’re not worried about, really, the outcome of yourself, but the outcome of the children.”
Parents across the country can likely relate to that instinctive response. Faced with danger, Woods focused entirely on protecting his children, putting their safety ahead of his own wellbeing.
The grateful father also reflected on the role his faith played during the frightening ordeal.
“I think God was over me and making sure I had the power to get through this window to get my kids.”
Many Americans would recognize the scene as a powerful example of parental sacrifice. While modern culture often downplays traditional family roles, moments like these serve as a reminder that fathers continue to step forward when their families need them most.
Medical experts note that children are especially vulnerable to heat-related emergencies because their body temperatures rise much faster than those of adults. In extreme heat, even a short delay can have devastating consequences.
Thankfully, Woods acted before tragedy struck.
Following the incident, Woods’ wife launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the family’s unexpected expenses, including emergency medical treatment, ambulance costs, and repairs to the damaged vehicle.
She wrote:
“We are incredibly grateful that our children are safe and that this frightening accident did not end in tragedy. Our 4-year-old had no idea what he had done, and accidents happen.
“However, we are now facing unexpected expenses from the ambulance ride, emergency medical care, and the cost of replacing the shattered truck window.
“Any donation, no matter the amount, would mean so much to our family and help ease the financial burden caused by this emergency.”
The fundraiser quickly gained support, raising more than $4,000 within days.
For Woods, however, the most important outcome wasn’t the money or the attention. It was the simple fact that all three of his children walked away safely.
On a day meant to celebrate fatherhood, Dominique Woods demonstrated exactly what being a father is all about: protecting his family at any cost and refusing to stand by when his children were in danger.
His truck window may be shattered, but thanks to his courage, his family remains whole.
