Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is staring down chaos within his own ranks as Democrats barrel toward a government shutdown. Instead of keeping his caucus united, Schumer now finds himself accused of double-dealing and weakness, with progressives openly turning on him.
Behind closed doors, Schumer reportedly floated the idea of passing a short-term spending patch to keep Washington operating. But in public, he blasted the very same idea, according to Axios, insisting Democrats couldn’t support it. His mixed messages have created what one insider described as an “open mutiny” within the party.
The New York Democrat’s plan was simple: buy seven to ten extra days by moving a temporary funding measure through Congress. That breathing room would give him time to negotiate with Republicans and President Trump, particularly over hot-button issues like Obamacare subsidies and new spending demands. But the hard-left faction of his party wanted none of it.
