China Just Caught Trump Off Guard

As President Donald Trump touched down in Beijing for one of the most closely watched diplomatic meetings of his second term, Communist China was already making moves behind the scenes on one of the world’s most explosive conflicts.

Just moments before Trump’s arrival in China, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi reportedly held a phone conversation with Pakistani Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar and pushed Islamabad to intensify efforts to mediate between the United States and Iran.

The timing was impossible to ignore.

As Air Force One descended into Beijing ahead of Trump’s high-stakes summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Beijing appeared eager to position itself as a major player in Middle East diplomacy while simultaneously attempting to influence discussions surrounding the growing tensions involving Tehran.

According to a summary released by China’s Foreign Ministry, Wang praised Pakistan’s role in encouraging negotiations between Washington and Tehran and urged Pakistani officials to stay engaged.
