A horrifying act of violence has left the city of Shreveport, Louisiana, grieving after eight children between the ages of 1 and 14 were brutally shot and killed early Sunday morning in what officials are calling one of the darkest days in the city’s history.
Authorities say two women and one teenager also survived the attack, though the injuries were severe. Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux confirmed that both women remain in critical condition, while the teen is expected to survive.
Police identified the suspect as Shamar Elkins, who according to reports was the father of some of the murdered children. The revelation has only intensified outrage, as the massacre appears tied to a domestic violence nightmare that spiraled into unimaginable bloodshed.
Law enforcement officials said the suspect fled the scene after the killings and carjacked a vehicle, triggering a police pursuit that extended into neighboring Bossier Parish.
