A terrifying scene unfolded at Old Dominion University in Virginia on Thursday when a gunman stormed a classroom and opened fire. The suspect managed to take one life and wound two others before a group of Reserve Officers’ Training Corps cadets rushed toward the danger and stopped the attack with their bare hands.
Authorities say the students’ quick reaction prevented what could have been a far more devastating massacre.
According to federal officials, the attacker has been identified as Mohamed Bailor Jalloh, a former member of the Army National Guard who previously served eight years in prison after attempting to assist the Islamic State terrorist organization.
Investigators say Jalloh entered a classroom on campus and began shooting. Witnesses reported hearing him shout “Allahu Akbar” during the attack, prompting federal authorities to immediately treat the incident as a potential act of terrorism.
The violence might have continued far longer if not for the decisive action taken by several ROTC cadets who were nearby when the gunfire erupted.
