A California real estate agent who allegedly operated as an unregistered Chinese government operative is facing serious allegations after investigators say they uncovered messages linking her to surveillance of the Taiwanese president’s family.
A seemingly ordinary real estate business in Southern California has become the center of a federal espionage case, raising fresh concerns about Beijing’s alleged intelligence activities on American soil.
Wanying Zhang, a 34-year-old real estate agent who reportedly went by the name “Heather” with her clients in Irvine, California, was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport as she prepared to board a flight to Shanghai, according to the allegations outlined by federal prosecutors.
Authorities allege that Zhang was secretly working on behalf of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), using her everyday professional activities to blend into American communities while gathering information on a politically sensitive target.
