California Chemical Disaster Just Got Worse

California officials ordered tens of thousands of residents out of their homes Friday after a dangerous chemical crisis at an aerospace manufacturing facility triggered fears of a catastrophic explosion and toxic spill.

Emergency crews spent hours battling to stabilize a massive storage tank at a Southern California industrial site after authorities warned the situation had spiraled out of control. The alarming incident forced evacuations across parts of Orange County as officials admitted they could no longer guarantee the tank could be contained.

The unfolding crisis centered around a 34,000-gallon storage container holding methyl methacrylate, commonly known as MMA, a highly combustible industrial chemical used in aerospace production. The substance is commonly found in plastic manufacturing and aircraft component fabrication, but officials warned it can become extremely dangerous under unstable conditions.

The troubled tank was located at a facility operated by aerospace manufacturer GKN Aerospace, a company that produces engine structures and parts used in both commercial and military aircraft.
