In a fiery Truth Social post, President-elect Donald Trump lashed out at Manhattan Judge Juan Merchan and District Attorney Alvin Bragg following the announcement of a January 10 sentencing date for his conviction on 34 counts of falsifying business records. The timing of the sentencing, just days before Trump is set to be inaugurated, has drawn sharp criticism from Trump and his supporters, who see the case as a politically motivated attack.
The conviction stems from a highly contentious case earlier this year in which Bragg’s office used extended COVID-era statute limitations to pursue what would typically be considered a misdemeanor. The administrative error, tied to a “hush money” payment, was elevated to felony charges on the grounds of an alleged conspiracy to commit another crime—a crime that Bragg never clearly identified. Critics have pointed out that Judge Merchan allowed the jury to convict Trump without even agreeing on the nature of this supposed second crime.
