Tensions in Washington are running high as the House Ethics Committee announced it would not release its highly anticipated report on sexual misconduct allegations against former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) on Wednesday. This delay has only fueled controversy, especially as Gaetz is set to undergo a critical confirmation process for the role of attorney general, a position nominated to him by President-elect Donald Trump.
The 10-member committee, which includes an equal number of Republicans and Democrats, reportedly voted along party lines. Democrats pushed for the public release of the report, while Republicans were opposed. This partisan divide has raised further questions about Gaetz’s qualifications for the role and added fuel to the fire surrounding Trump’s choice for attorney general. Gaetz has consistently denied any wrongdoing, but the allegations continue to cloud his prospects.

After a meeting that lasted around two hours, the committee’s chair, Rep. Michael Guest (R-MS), addressed reporters, stating, “There is not an agreement by the committee to release the report.” The delay comes as lawmakers from both parties have been pressuring the committee for transparency on the matter.
